WELCOME TO KOLEA SURFBOARDS
I'm Jason. I'm the designer, shaper, glasser, color mixer, marathon sander, sweeper, coffee brewer & ink cartridge changer for my operation. I'm well entrenched in my 50's & my surfing life began when I first stood up on a board at 13. The SE corner of Oahu is where I call home & it's where I grew up. I have a deep attachment to waters off this rugged coast & I am fortunate enough to be living here today with my beautiful wife & 2 dogs.
I started designing my own boards in 2011 because I was having trouble getting shapers to execute the things I wanted in my equipment. I started out as a "computer shaper" & eventually graduated to handshaping & now doing every stage of the production except for the machine cuts that I use as my blank canvas.
If I get too busy to do it all myself I have good relationships with the best color people, laminators & sanders/finishers on Oahu that I know can rely on to work their magic on my shapes.
My primary focus is keeping everyone who surfs, surfing actively. It's the best mood medication there is, and unfortunately it's easy to neglect as life gets busy.
Hands down, nothing gets me happier than when someone tells me that the board I made them is the best they've ever ridden; and they're hooked on that feeling & eager to chase it over & over again.
I really try to focus on the rider's needs & in a sense play psychologist, alchemist & witch doctor all in one. So to that end, over the past 4 years I've turned my focus from performance thrusters to Asymmetrical surfboards (Asyms). The response has been overwhelmingly positive. They are easy to surf, require less effort to surf at your best ability, and have brought the fun back to surfing for far more people than I ever imagined they would.
I still enjoy designing & handshaping symmetrical boards, especially if I have time to handshape them from a raw foam blank.
My shaping room is located on Sand Island, just 5 minutes from Daniel K Inouye International Airport. If you've been entertaining the idea of riding something different from the typical mass market stock boards you find in the surf shops these days, hit me up;
I'd be glad to talk design with you & help you with equipment that might just breathe new life into your surfing!
Aloha!
